Vetiver Root
Latin Name:Vetiveria zizanioides
Common Name:Vetiver
Family:Poaceae
Plant Part(s):Root

Vetiver is a tall, scented grass that is native to South India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Its roots are highly fragrant and typically burned as an incense, or extracted and bottled for use as an essential oil. When burned, vetiver exudes a smoky, earthy and woody fragrance. In aromatherapy, vetiver is known as "the oil of tranquility" and is used to alleviate stress.

Vetiver grows up to 8 feet in height and can often be found growing on hillsides in India due to its noted ability to prevent soil erosion during the rainy season. It is a hardy plant that can withstand drought, fire and grazing. Its complex, white rootlets make it an excellent stabalizing hedge for stream banks, terraces and rice paddies. When burned, vetiver root may be used as an effective natural insect repellent.
