About Mumm's

We have been farming organically since the 1970s, and selling high quality organic sprouting seed for over 30 years. The farm is located near Shellbrook, Saskatchewan, Canada and through our warehouse located in Parkside, Saskatchewan we can ship anywhere in Canada or the US. We also export overseas.

Jim and I started farming, by "going back to the land" in the mid 1970's. We had milk cows, chickens, pigs, sheep, honey bees, leafcutter bees, a big garden, and a small saw mill. One of the main crops we grew on our small organic farm was alfalfa seed. Over half of our farm is still original forest.

Fifteen years later we had two small children, a flock of sheep and a side line business selling our organic alfalfa and radish seed for sprouting. The coyotes helped us to decide to get out of sheep by killing 60 one summer, despite our best efforts.

Our sprouting seed business kept growing and growing and by the mid 1990's it was more than we could handle, so we took the big step of expanding our team. In 2000 we moved our sprouting seeds and office from the farm to an old curling rink in the nearby town of Parkside. Now it's still more than we can handle, but we have a great crew helping us.

It's been an adventure getting to the point we are now. Jim has retired from the office to spend his days on the farm. Although our business has outgrown the capacity of our small farm, Jim and our daughter Lisa continue to grow some specialty sprouting seed crops on our farm. We have had the good fortune of being able to source our sprouting seeds from organic farmers who are open minded, innovative, and a pleasure to know. We source most of our seed from farmers in Saskatchewan, but seed that doesn't grow well in our climate is grown on organic farms outside the province or country.

In 2009, after completing a BA in International Studies at the University of Saskatchewan, and a brief stint at McGill Law, our daughter Lisa returned home to pursue her passions of organic agriculture and sustainable food systems. She's actively involved in the movement to protect farmers and consumers from the threat of GMOs. She also sits on the board of the Canada Organic Trade Association and Organic Connections. Lisa is proud to be a fifth generation farmer. In 2015 Lisa and her husband Paul recently welcomed the next generation to our farm- our grandson Nico.

Arugula: Very high in protein, vitamin B6, amino acids, iron and calcium.

Lentils: An excellent source of folate and manganese, and a good source of thiamin, iron, phosphorus, and copper.

Red Clover: Vitamins A, B, C, E, & K; rich in minerals and trace elements.

Alfalfa: Rich in vitamins C and B6, riboflavin, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, manganese, protein, thiamin, pantothenic acid, calcium, and iron.

Radish: Great protein source and very good source of vitamins A, B6, C, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc. Black Mustard- Vitamins A & C, minerals.

Storage

Our seeds should sprout well for a year after you purchase them, if stored in a cool dry place. If you'd like to extend the germination life of your seeds, store them in the fridge. If you store your seeds in the freezer, they'll last even longer!

Sprouting Directions

Easy sprouting directions (jar method):

SOAK- Put 1 to 2 Tbsp. seed in a wide mouth jar. Cover with mesh and secure with rubber band. Add water, swirl, and drain. Add 1 cup cool water and soak for 4 to 6 hours. Drain well.

RINSE - Twice a day, refill jar with cool water, swirl, and drain. Invert jar and prop at an angle in a sink or bowl.

ENJOY - Ready to eat in 3 to 4 days. Refrigerate to store. (Sprouts can be refrigerated for up to two weeks in a sealed container. (Sprouts store best when they are fairly dry- do not store immediately after rinsing.)

Easy sprouting directions (tray method):

SOAK- Cover the bottom of the sprouting tray with one single layer of seed. Place the tray and seeds in a dish of water and soak for 4 to 6 hours. (Alternatively, once you've measured your seeds in the tray, you can put the seeds in a bowl, fill the bowl with water, and soak for 4 to 6 hours.) Drain well.

RINSE - Twice a day, rinse the seeds. Either rinse under a tap of running water, or use a spray bottle to mist well. Tip the tray to the side to drain well.

ENJOY - Ready to eat in 3 to 4 days. Refrigerate to store. Sprouts can be refrigerated for up to two weeks in a sealed container. (Sprouts store best when they are fairly dry- do not store immediately after rinsing.)
